Thailand's Air Force Expands Reach with Two New C295s
BANGKOK โ The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) is significantly boosting its defense capabilities with an order for two new Airbus C295 tactical transport aircraft. The move marks a clear expansion of the RTAF's air mobility and logistical support fleet.
The 46th Wing, based at Phitsanulok Air Base, will operate these robust twin-turboprop aircraft. Known for their ruggedness and adaptability, these C295s will primarily handle tactical transport, allowing the RTAF to move personnel, equipment, and vital aid quickly across the kingdom and potentially further afield.
But while these are the Air Force's first C295s, the aircraft itself isn't new to Thailand. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) already flies three C295s. Those planes have proved their worth on various missions, showing just how reliable and suitable the type is for the country's unique operational demands. This latest acquisition means a wider, more integrated C295 fleet across Thailand's armed forces, which could significantly improve cooperation between the Army and Air Force.
Its design, for example, lets it operate from short, unpaved runways. That's essential for reaching remote or underdeveloped areas โ vital for disaster relief, humanitarian aid, or military deployments in challenging terrain. Across many air forces worldwide, it's proved its value as a true workhorse, tackling everything from troop deployment and cargo delivery to medical evacuation and even maritime surveillance.
This latest investment shows Thailand's commitment to modernizing its military, making sure its forces have advanced, reliable aircraft. These two C295s will undeniably give the RTAF more flexibility and reach, strengthening both its national security and its ability to help maintain regional stability.
