Overview

Lisbon has been 'discovered' about six times in the past decade. It doesn't care. The city absorbs tourists the way it absorbs everything — slowly, on its own terms, without losing what makes it worth visiting.

Full destination guide content would appear here once the pipeline generates it.

Things To Do

Alfama at sunset

CultureHigh

Climb to the Miradouro da Graça at 6pm with a beer from the corner shop. No queue, better view than the Portas do Sol, locals outnumber tourists by a satisfying ratio.

Pastéis de Belém

FoodHigh

Yes, it's touristy. Yes, the queue moves fast. And yes, the custard tart here is meaningfully better than every imitation in the city. Worth 20 minutes of your life.

Cuisine

Local Food & Drink

Francesinha

This is a Porto export that's made it to Lisbon menus — a toasted sandwich with multiple meats, covered in a spiced beer-and-tomato sauce that takes all day to make. Not a light option. Order it for lunch.

Where: Solar dos Presuntos, Restauradores

Neighbourhoods to Know

Mouraria

The oldest neighbourhood in the city and the one that feels least like it's trying to be photographed. Fado comes from here. The buildings are falling apart in the best possible way.

Best for: Evening fado, authentic restaurants

Caution

Things To Avoid

Tram 28 at peak hours

Standing room only, pickpockets, and 40 minutes to cover a distance you could walk in 20. Take it once for the view, then walk.

Tip: Walk up the hills. The neighbourhoods are better explored on foot anyway.

Insider Tips

  1. 1

Lisbon's hills are real. If your knees don't appreciate steep cobblestones at the end of a long day, take the elevadores. They exist for a reason.

  2. 2

Eat lunch at a tasca rather than a restaurant. €10 will get you a daily special, bread, and a glass of wine. These are the best meals in the city.
