Storms Reroute Nice Flights, Stranding Hundreds Across the Med

Hundreds of passengers found themselves unexpectedly stranded across the Mediterranean yesterday after severe storms over the French Riviera forced five international flights bound for Nice Côte d'Azur Airport to divert. Air traffic controllers, dealing with chaotic conditions, rerouted incoming aircraft to alternate airports as far-flung as Rome and Corsica.

Disruption hit long-haul and key European routes hard. British Airways, for instance, saw two of its London Heathrow services affected. Flight BA328, having left London, abruptly touched down in Bastia, Corsica. Its sister flight, BA330, also out of Heathrow, diverted instead to Rome Fiumicino. Imagine the inconvenience for passengers expecting to step off in Nice.

Italy quickly became a primary refuge for several other services. EasyJet flight U24701, en route from Nantes, and Norwegian Air Sweden's D84321, inbound from Stockholm, both made unscheduled landings in Genoa. It shows just how dramatically airlines must adjust flight paths — and quickly — when the weather turns.

Even further afield, Qatar Airways flight QR55, a significant intercontinental service from Doha, couldn't reach Nice either. That long-haul journey finished not on the Riviera, but at Rome Fiumicino, landing alongside one of the diverted British Airways jets. What began as a routine trip for these travellers swiftly morphed into a complex logistical challenge. Many now face onward journeys by ground or entirely new flights just to get to Nice.

Aviation authorities haven't yet detailed the full extent of the delays or the onward travel plans for those affected. But it's clear yesterday's meteorological challenges created substantial headaches for airlines and travellers alike. It's a stark reminder of just how fast flight plans can unravel when the weather refuses to cooperate.
