History

The Story of Air Dolomiti

Air Dolomiti was established on December 30, 1989, by Linee Aeree Europee (L.A.E.) and commenced flight operations in January 1991 with a route connecting Trieste and Genoa. Taking its name from the Dolomite mountain range, the carrier initially focused on developing regional links from smaller Italian cities into broader European networks. In 1992, the airline expanded into international scheduled services by launching flights from Verona to Munich, laying the groundwork for a closer commercial alignment with Lufthansa.

Cooperation with the German carrier deepened progressively over the decade. Lufthansa acquired an initial 26% stake in Air Dolomiti in January 1999, increased its shareholding to 52% in 2003, and completed a full takeover by July 2003. Despite complete integration into the Lufthansa Group as an Italian subsidiary, Air Dolomiti successfully retained its distinct brand identity and corporate structure.

Today, Air Dolomiti operates primarily as a key feeder network carrier for Lufthansa, executing high-frequency scheduled flights from numerous Italian destinations to Lufthansa’s core hubs at Munich and Frankfurt. The airline modernised and standardized its operational capabilities by transitioning to an all-Embraer E-Jet fleet (comprising E190 and E195 aircraft), reinforcing its position within the European regional aviation sector.

Branding

Livery & Visual Identity

Air Dolomiti's visual branding has undergone subtle modernization while preserving its distinct alpine-inspired identity. Early operations featured a livery that heavily incorporated green and blue cheatlines alongside the stylized mountain logo representing the Dolomites, reflecting the carrier's regional Italian roots.

Following its full acquisition by the Lufthansa Group, the livery was refined to align with modern corporate standards while retaining its unique character rather than adopting standard Lufthansa white-and-yellow branding. Today's aircraft feature a crisp white fuselage paired with a deep teal-green tailfin adorned with the stylized multi-peak Air Dolomiti logo and dynamic green-and-blue sweeping accents along the rear underside, maintaining a distinct visual separation from its parent company's fleet.
