History

The Story of Ana

All Nippon Airways (ANA) traces its origins to the December 1952 founding of Nippon Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports, which initially commenced operations with helicopter services before expanding into scheduled cargo and passenger flights. Through a series of corporate consolidations—most notably absorbing Far East Airlines in 1958—the carrier unified under the All Nippon Airways banner, gradually establishing a dominant domestic network alongside Japan Air Lines (JAL).

Deregulation of the Japanese aviation market in the 1980s and 1990s permitted ANA to launch its first international scheduled services, growing rapidly from regional roots into a major global carrier. Today, ANA is Japan's largest airline, operating an extensive international and domestic network, anchored by its membership in the Star Alliance and supported by a diverse fleet of widebody and narrowbody aircraft.

Branding

Livery & Visual Identity

ANA's visual identity is widely recognized for its clean, corporate aesthetic. From 1969 to 1983, the airline utilized the prominent "Mohican" livery, which featured a dark blue cheatline running along the windows with a stylized blue and white vertical stabilizer logo derived from Leonardo da Vinci's aerial screw.

In 1982, ANA introduced its current overarching visual branding framework, transitioning to a bold tricolor scheme consisting of a white fuselage, a grey underbelly, and dual-tone blue bands (Triton Blue and Mohawk Blue) sweeping backward in a distinct directional wedge toward a dark blue tail marked with the stylized "ANA" lettering. This design has remained the foundation of the fleet's aesthetic, with minor adaptations applied for special corporate milestones and aircraft launches.
