History

The Story of Edelweiss

Edelweiss Air was founded on October 19, 1995, in Bassersdorf, Switzerland, initially launching operations with a single McDonnell Douglas MD-83. Named after Switzerland's unofficial national flower, the leisure carrier quickly expanded its footprint, replacing its MD-83 fleet with Airbus A320 aircraft in 1998 and introducing long-haul services to vacation destinations utilizing the Airbus A330-200 by 1999.

For much of its early history, the airline operated as an independent subsidiary of Kuoni Travel. In November 2008, ownership shifted when its operating rights were acquired by Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), which itself had become part of the German Lufthansa Group. This integration embedded Edelweiss firmly within the Lufthansa Group network as the leading Swiss leisure specialist, operating a modernized fleet of narrowbody and widebody aircraft out of its primary hub at Zurich Airport to regional and intercontinental holiday routes.

Branding

Livery & Visual Identity

The visual identity of Edelweiss revolves heavily around its namesake alpine flower, the edelweiss, which serves as both the corporate emblem and a central motif on the aircraft vertical stabilizers. Over the decades, the base livery has maintained a clean, white fuselage complemented by deep blue accent striping and text typography, reflecting its tight alignment with parent carrier SWISS while retaining its distinct holiday-oriented branding.

As the fleet has transitioned through various generations of Airbus aircraft—ranging from early twin-jets to modern widebodies—the core tail design featuring the stylized white edelweiss flower against a red or dark blue background has undergone minor stylistic modernizations. Contemporary applications feature sleek, dynamic curvature on the titles and crisp, high-contrast empennage graphics that signal premium Swiss leisure travel.
