History

The Story of Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways was established on November 22, 1993, by a decree of the Qatari government, and commenced commercial flight operations on January 20, 1994. Initially functioning as a modest regional carrier with a small fleet of leased aircraft, the airline was restructured in 1997 under the leadership of Akbar Al Baker, who assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer. Under his management, the airline embarked on an aggressive, capital-intensive expansion strategy, transforming from a minor regional operator into a major global network carrier connecting traffic between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas through its primary hub at Hamad International Airport in Doha.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Qatar Airways scaled rapidly, investing heavily in modern widebody and narrowbody equipment from both Airbus and Boeing. The airline withdrew from its participation in the regional Gulf Air consortium in 2002 to independently focus its resources on national network development. In October 2013, Qatar Airways officially joined the oneworld airline alliance, integrating its frequent-flyer program and global partnerships. Today, it occupies a dominant market position among major long-haul network airlines, frequently competing with regional peers like Emirates and Etihad Airways for intercontinental transfer traffic.

Branding

Livery & Visual Identity

Qatar Airways' visual identity has undergone minimal structural changes since its inception, maintaining a restrained and clean aesthetic compared to many of its regional competitors. The foundational livery introduced in 1994 featured a white fuselage bisected by two thin burgundy pinstripes running along the window line, transitioning into a solid burgundy fill on the vertical stabilizer adorned with a white graphic of an oryx—the national animal of Qatar—encircled in white.

In 2006, the airline rolled out an updated visual scheme that significantly enlarged the burgundy oryx graphic to cover the entirety of the vertical tail fin. This iteration also introduced the oryx corporate logo painted prominently onto the aircraft belly. Subsequent refinements have largely preserved this palette, utilizing a stark white upper body, deep burgundy tail and engine cowlings, and grey belly accents, maintaining a consistent corporate image across its modern Airbus and Boeing fleets.
