History
The Story of Smartwings
Smartwings was founded in September 1997 under the name Travel Service Airlines a.s., initially focusing on charter operations for Czech tour operators using a mixed fleet that included the Tupolev Tu-154M before transitioning to Boeing 737 equipment. In 2004, the carrier launched the low-cost brand "SmartWings" to operate scheduled European leisure routes alongside its core charter business. Over the following decade, the airline expanded through subsidiaries in Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, establishing a prominent footprint across Central and Eastern Europe.
In December 2018, Travel Service officially changed its corporate name to Smartwings, a.s. to reflect the dominance of its primary consumer brand. Having previously acquired a stake in national carrier Czech Airlines (ČSA) in 2017, Smartwings integrated operations further following subsequent restructuring. Today, Smartwings stands as the largest airline in the Czech Republic, operating a uniform narrowbody fleet dedicated to scheduled services, extensive holiday charters, and wet-lease agreements for international carriers.
Branding
Livery & Visual Identity
During its early decades as Travel Service, the airline utilized a straightforward corporate livery featuring a predominantly white fuselage accented by a blue and orange cheatline, accompanied by a stylized globe or sun-themed tail logo. With the progressive rollout of the Smartwings brand in the late 2010s, the visual identity was modernized to align with a low-cost leisure aesthetic.
Today's Smartwings livery utilizes a clean white fuselage dominated by large, bold orange and dark grey typography across the forward section. The vertical stabilizer and winglets feature a vibrant orange and dark grey curved wing-like motif that echoes the company's corporate logo, providing high visibility across its European operating bases.
