Getting To & From Tokyo Haneda International Airport

Tokyo Haneda Airport is located approximately 14 kilometers south of central Tokyo and offers fast, frequent rail links. The Tokyo Monorail connects all terminals to Hamamatsucho Station in roughly 15 to 20 minutes (costing around 500 JPY), where passengers can transfer directly to the JR Yamanote Line. Alternatively, the Keikyu Line runs from the airport to Shinagawa Station in about 13 to 20 minutes (costing roughly 310 to 330 JPY) with further connections onto the Asakusa Subway Line. Airport Limousine buses provide direct service to major hotels and transit hubs across the metropolitan area, taking anywhere from 30 to 80 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis into central Tokyo operate on fixed-zone or metered rates, typically taking 30 to 40 minutes and costing between 6,000 and 11,000 JPY, with a late-night surcharge applied between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

Terminals & Getting Around

Terminals

Haneda Airport operates three main passenger terminals. Terminal 1 handles primarily domestic services for Japan Airlines (JAL) alongside carriers like Skymark Airlines. Terminal 2 handles domestic services for All Nippon Airways (ANA) as well as select international ANA flights. Terminal 3 is the primary international hub, handling foreign carriers alongside international flights operated by JAL and ANA. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked landside by an underground walkway taking about 5 to 10 minutes. Free inter-terminal shuttle buses run frequently on the landside connecting Terminal 3 to the domestic buildings. Transfer passengers moving between domestic and international flights can also obtain a special inter-terminal transit ticket at information counters to use the monorail or Keikyu railway for free without exiting to the public street level.

Hours of Operation

Terminal 3 and parts of Terminal 2 operate 24 hours a day to accommodate late-night and early-morning flights, while domestic Terminals 1 and 2 generally close down between midnight and 5:00 AM. Public rail and bus services do not operate during these overnight hours.

Know Before You Go

Practical Tips

  • Security and immigration queues at Terminal 3 can experience significant bottlenecks during peak departure banks late in the evening; arriving at least 3 hours prior to international flights is recommended.
  • Minimum connection times vary depending on whether you are transferring between domestic-to-domestic, domestic-to-international, or international-to-international flights, requiring anywhere from 60 to 120 minutes. Be sure to verify if your transfer requires changing terminals.
  • If you arrive on a late-night flight after trains stop running, verify your overnight accommodation options in advance, such as the airport hotels connected to the terminals or designated 24-hour waiting areas in Terminal 3.
  • Purchase a Welcome Suica or Pasmo passport IC card at the airport station counters for seamless tapping through regional trains, buses, and convenience stores during your stay in Japan.
