Getting To & From Daniel K. Inouye International Airport

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is located approximately 5 miles (8 km) northwest of downtown Honolulu and about 9 miles from Waikiki. Public transit options include TheBus (specifically Route W and routes 19 and 20), which connect the airport to downtown and Waikiki with affordable fares. The Honolulu Skyline rail system features the Lelepaua station linked directly to Terminal 2's parking garage via a pedestrian pathway. Taxis, rideshares (Uber and Lyft), and pre-arranged commercial shuttle services operate out of designated curbside zones on the ground level.

Navigate

Terminals & Getting Around

Terminals

HNL operates three passenger terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 serves Hawaiian Airlines for domestic interisland and mainland routes. Terminal 2 handles the vast majority of major U.S. domestic and international carriers across Concourses C, D, E, F, and G. Terminal 3 is a small commuter facility on the eastern edge used exclusively by Mokulele Airlines. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked airside and landside by upper-level pedestrian walkways as well as the complimentary Wiki Wiki shuttle and open-air trams. Transferring between major terminals on foot typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Hours of Operation

The airfield and airport facilities operate 24 hours daily to handle late arrivals and early departures, though individual airline ticket counters, security checkpoints, and specific concessions close overnight.

Know Before You Go

Practical Tips

  • Security Wait Times: Security checkpoint operating hours vary by terminal, with nightly closures ranging generally between late evening and early morning hours (e.g., around 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM). Arrive at least 2 hours prior to international flights and 90 minutes before domestic departures.
  • Interisland Connections: Verify whether your interisland flight departs from Terminal 1 (Hawaiian Airlines) or Terminal 3 (Mokulele) to avoid unnecessary transit delays between distant ends of the airport property.
  • Open-Air Design: Much of HNL features open-air concourses and walkways exposed to tropical elements. Dress comfortably for the humidity and prepare for brief walks between gates without full climate control.

Comfort

Lounges

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) features a solid mix of airline-operated clubs, though independent and Priority Pass lounge options are notably restricted. In Terminal 2, major carriers maintain dedicated spaces, including the American Airlines Admirals Club / Japan Airlines Sakura Lounge complex, the ANA Lounge and Suite Lounge (tailored for transpacific travelers), the Delta Sky Club, and the Korean Air KAL Lounge. Regional or contract spaces like the IASS Hawaii Lounge and the H.I.S. LeaLea Lounge also operate within Terminal 2. Passengers relying purely on multi-program independent access should check current network participation beforehand, as traditional third-party network capacity shifts frequently.

Staying Online

Wi-Fi & Charging

HNL provides unlimited, free wireless internet access across Terminals 1 and 2, sponsored by advertisers. While the complimentary service is generally adequate for basic web browsing and email, travelers report variable speeds and occasional dead zones depending on proximity to boarding gates. Those requiring higher bandwidth for remote work or streaming can purchase a high-speed upgrade package through Boingo. Mobile device charging points are integrated throughout the gate seating areas in both main terminals, though outlet placement can be sporadic; carrying a portable power bank remains advisable for peak departure banks.

Eat & Drink

Food & Dining

Terminal 2 houses the primary post-security culinary hub, anchored by The Lanai Food Court, which brings together casual favorites like Burger King, Panda Express, California Pizza Kitchen, and local staple Little Fish Poke. For sit-down dining and drinks, options include Sammy Hagar's Beach Bar & Grill in Terminal 2. In the newer Mauka Concourse, Mauka Market offers localized island-inspired quick bites, pupus, and regional craft brews on tap. Options become drastically scarcer in Terminal 1's older interisland sections and Terminal 3, where offerings are largely limited to basic grab-and-go kiosks and coffee counters.

Driving In

Parking

Parking infrastructure at HNL comprises the Terminal 1 (Interisland) Garage, Terminal 2 (Overseas) Garage, and the central International Parking Structure. Short-term rates feature a 15-minute free grace period, followed by $1 for 16–30 minutes, $3 for 31–60 minutes, $6 for 1–2 hours, and scaling up incrementally. The maximum daily drive-up rate for parking eight hours or more (including overnight stays) is $29 per day under current Hawaii Department of Transportation pricing structures. Electric vehicle owners can utilize OpConnect Level 2 charging stalls located on the ground floor of the International Parking Structure.

Staying Nearby

Nearby Hotels

There are no resort or hotel properties physically attached to the airport terminals via a direct walking bridge. However, a couple of standard accommodations operate just outside the perimeter along Nimitz Highway, accessible via short shuttle rides or rideshares. These include the Best Western The Plaza Hotel Honolulu Airport and the Airport Honolulu Hotel (part of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham). Most travelers seeking full-service resort amenities or major beachfront flag properties look toward Waikiki, which sits roughly a 20-to-30-minute drive southeast depending on traffic conditions.
