When to go
Summer, running from June through August, brings long daylight hours, midnight sun in the north, green forest trails, and open-air food festivals like the Helsinki Festival in August. Temperatures are mild, and outdoor cafe culture peaks. Winter, spanning December to March, transforms the country into a frozen wonderland of deep snowbanks, frozen lakes, and sub-zero temperatures, perfect for cross-country skiing and experiencing regional traditions. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October, known locally as ruska when forests turn amber and gold) bring fewer crowds, though shoulder seasons mean changeable weather and shorter daylight.
