Kuwait's low-cost pioneer Jazeera Airways is packing it in early on its direct link between Kuwait City and Milan Bergamo. What started as an ambitious play to capture northern Italian traffic has crashed hard into the reality of sluggish ticket sales. Instead of sticking it out through the autumn schedule, the airline has drawn a hard line under the experiment. The final rotation will touch down and depart on September 11, effectively closing the book on a connection that simply failed to catch fire with travelers.

From Four Weekly Flights to a Ghost Route

Things haven't looked healthy for this corridor in a long time. If you looked at the booking sheets recently, you would've spotted a stark retreat from the carrier's original game plan. Jazeera initially mapped out a robust four-times-weekly schedule to feed traffic between the Gulf and Lombardy. Reality had other ideas. Frequencies were slashed to a bare-bones weekly rotation operating solely on Fridays. When an airline cuts service down to a single weekend token flight, the writing is usually glowing neon on the wall. The numbers simply didn't add up, leaving management no choice but to pull the plug before losses mounted further.

What's Next for Travelers and Bergamo

Milan Bergamo has built a solid reputation as a low-cost powerhouse, largely thanks to carriers like Ryanair making the airport a thriving hub. Yet long-haul and Middle Eastern low-cost experiments remain notoriously tricky to sustain without solid connecting traffic or heavy tourist demand in both directions. Passengers holding tickets past the mid-September cutoff are now left scrambling for alternatives, while travel agents cross yet another direct option off their booking systems. For Jazeera, it's back to the drawing board as they recalibrate their European network strategy, leaving Bergamo without a direct link to Kuwait for the foreseeable future.
