The Airbus A350-900 is a long-range, twin-engine wide-body airliner representing the baseline model of Airbus's advanced composite-airframe family. Designed as a clean-sheet response to evolving market requirements in the long-haul sector, it incorporates extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) across its fuselage and wing structures to optimize weight and operating economics.

Entering commercial service in January 2015 with launch customer Qatar Airways, the aircraft has established itself as a core asset for major international carriers operating medium- to ultra-long-haul routes. Its signature 'Airspace' cabin design delivers higher humidity levels, optimized cabin pressure altitude, and lower ambient noise floors to improve passenger comfort on extended journeys.

A notable technical milestone for the A350-900 program was its EASA certification for ETOPS beyond 180 minutes prior to entry into service, granting unprecedented routing flexibility for a twin-engine platform. Additionally, specialized sub-variants like the A350-900ULR (Ultra-Long-Range) enable non-stop commercial missions exceeding 18 hours, connecting city pairs such as Singapore and New York.

The Airbus A350 program has achieved substantial commercial traction since entering service, surpassing the milestone of 1,600 total firm orders for the family. Specifically, the baseline A350-900 variant has accumulated over 1,100 firm orders, driving the bulk of the program's backlog. Across the entire A350 family, cumulative deliveries have surpassed 700 airframes as production scales to meet strong long-haul widebody demand.

Operations are heavily concentrated among major flag carriers across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. High-capacity operators such as Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Air France anchor the type's presence in international trunk routes, while growing fleets at carriers like Turkish Airlines and Air India continue to expand its footprint globally.

Where It's Built

The Airbus A350-900 final assembly takes place at the Roger Béteille Final Assembly Line (FAL) located in Toulouse, France. Airbus utilizes a decentralized European manufacturing model where major structural components are built across specialized facilities and transported to Toulouse primarily via the BelugaXL transport fleet.

Key structural and systems suppliers include:

  • Wings: Engineered in Filton and manufactured using carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers at Airbus Operations in Broughton, United Kingdom. High-lift systems are designed and built in Bremen, Germany.
  • Fuselage Sections: The nose and cockpit section are built in Nantes, France. Forward and aft fuselage sections are manufactured and equipped in Nordenham, Stade, and Hamburg, Germany, alongside contributions from Airbus Atlantic facilities in France.
  • Empennage: The vertical stabilizer is produced in Stade, Germany, while the horizontal stabilizer is manufactured in Getafe, Spain.
  • Avionics and Systems: Primary flight control computers and architecture are supplied by major partners including Thales (avionics suite), Honeywell (flight management system and air management), Moog (primary flight control actuators), Liebherr (slat actuators), and Collins Aerospace (trim actuators).

Regarding the program's total development cost, Airbus has not published a single, precise, officially isolated figure for the A350 program alone, though industry estimates generally place the capital investment between €12 billion and €15 billion.
