Frontier Adds Detroit-LaGuardia Route in Major DTW Surge

Frontier isn't wasting time picking up the pieces in Detroit. On November 20, the budget carrier launches a daily nonstop flight from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA)—part of a broader push to capture the local market. Throw in higher flight frequencies down to Florida, and Frontier expects to offer 41% more seats out of the Motor City by March 2027 compared to the same month a year earlier.

Cheap options have been hard to come by since Spirit Airlines scaled back operations at DTW earlier this year. Frontier is stepping straight into that vacuum. Once the LaGuardia route takes off, the airline will fly nonstop to 15 cities out of Detroit. Crucially, 11 of those routes were previously flown by Spirit, cementing Frontier as the main low-cost survivor in the terminal.

A Direct Line to LaGuardia

Timing is everything. The new service launches right before the winter holiday surge, running daily during peak travel windows and scaling back to three flights a week during quieter lulls. To kick things off, the airline dropped introductory fares starting at $69 one-way.

Naturally, there's fine print to contend with. Tickets must be purchased by September 23, 2026, for travel between December 2, 2026, and March 6, 2027. You'll need to book at least 21 days in advance, and blackout dates wipe out the primary holiday runs from December 19 through December 31, as well as January 1 through January 4. Still, snagging a sub-$100 seat into New York's most practical airport is a solid deal for flexible flyers.

Josh Flyr, Frontier's vice president of network and operations design, pitched the move as a major break for price-conscious Michiganders. Paired with existing nonstops to leisure spots like Las Vegas, Cancún, and Orlando, the carrier wants to position itself as the default alternative for travellers tired of paying legacy airfares.

Doubling Down on Florida

Florida gets the bulk of the remaining push. Knowing where Midwesterners head once the cold sets in, Frontier is adding more weekly flights to four key Sunshine State hubs: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL), Tampa (TPA), Orlando (MCO), and Miami (MIA).

Those extra runs drive the airline's 41% year-over-year capacity surge at DTW by March 2027. Pumping frequency into proven leisure routes—rather than gambling on unproven cities—gives Frontier genuine operational density in Detroit. That means better schedule recovery when weather delays hit, alongside real competition for Delta, which operates a massive hub at DTW.

Shaking off the Bare-Bones Reputation

All these new flights arrive alongside a clear shift in how the airline packages its product. Frontier wants to shed its bare-bones image in favor of what it calls "high value" travel. That includes UpFront Plus seating—a premium option in the front two rows that guarantees an empty middle seat, plus extra legroom and elbow room.

More changes are lined up down the road. The carrier plans to introduce proper First Class seats and roll out free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. That's a serious pivot for an airline that once charged for virtually everything beyond basic boarding. Meanwhile, its updated Frontier Miles program lets flyers reach Elite status at just 10,000 points in 2026, unlocking perks like priority boarding and free checked bags, plus family pooling features to combine miles across a household.

What's happening at DTW isn't just a simple route addition to LaGuardia. It's a permanent changing of the guard in Michigan's budget travel scene.
