Syrianair Revamps Fleet With Eight Jets

Damascus has a new jet on the apron. Syrianair just took delivery of its first Airbus A320-200—registered YR-AKI—in a quiet push to bring basic reliability back to a network long battered by economic isolation and grounded aircraft.

Plane spotters caught the arrival in full livery, a clean visual reset for a carrier eager to fix its public image. It won't sit alone for long. A sister A320, bearing registration YR-AKJ, is due to land shortly in identical colors.

Eight Planes to Turn Things Around

These initial narrowbodies are just the start. Under its newly unveiled strategy, Syrianair wants eight aircraft running in its active lineup. Management hasn't detailed the exact mix of airframes yet, but the immediate goal is simple: stabilize core routes before attempting any real expansion.

Sanctions and relentless maintenance bottlenecks have choked the flag carrier for years. Sourcing these airframes gives the airline a rare break, letting it retire the breakdown-prone equipment that ruined its punctuality records.

Rebuilding the Map

Securing planes is hard enough; flying them reliably is where the real work begins. Alongside the deliveries, Syrianair is plotting a step-by-step return to key destinations, trying to stitch its regional and international map back together as capacity comes online.

Whether eight jets can win back skeptical travelers against heavy regional competition is an open question. Still, seeing fresh Airbus hardware roll up to the terminal gives the struggling carrier something it hasn't had in years: actual momentum.
